Outside the election booth, the only campaigners handing out voting papers came from the Left Party and the Green Party, reflecting these two parties' grip on this Malmö district, which The Local visited to get a sense of the mood among opposition voters.
"It looks like it's going to be a tight race," said Vera, who was handing out leaflets for the Green Party.
She believes that disagreements between the left-wing parties had benefited the current government parties, as "people know what they're going to get."
"It's a nailbiter," agreed Anders, who was handing out voting slips for the Left Party. "There's been a lot of bickering between parties on the left side and I think people see the current government parties as maybe more in line with one another other.
"Obviously I would say that this is the Centre Party's fault, being a Left Party member!"
The Left Party won 31 percent of the vote in this district in the 2022 election, and the four opposition parties won a colossal 75 percent, making it one of the most left-wing districts in Sweden.
'Feels incredibly important'
Inside the polling station, Ebba, a woman in her early 20s, said she felt pirrig, which means having "butterflies in your stomach".
"It feels like there is so much at stake," she said. "It feels incredibly important that everyone goes and votes today and I really hope that we will get good news and a new left-wing government."
She said she had been "a little disappointed" during the campaign that the left-wing parties had not presented "clearer proposals on how they wanted to change things", particularly on schools and healthcare.
She said she felt the Green Party had been best at laying out a vision, but said she would still vote for the Left Party, because it has "consistently put people's wellbeing first".
'Once upon a time I believed that things would get better'
Per, a pensioner a few minutes behind Ebba in the queue, said he had voted left-of-centre all his life and was not going to change this time.
He feared, though, that even if there is a change in government, it will not do much to stop Sweden's rightward drift.
"I really hope that this government does not stay in power, but unfortunately it seems like even if there is another government, then it won't make an insanely big difference," he said.
"I am hoping for a shift, though, because it cannot get much worse than how it has been the four last years, with teen deportations and the deportation of people who contribute to society. It is completely insane."
In general, he said, he had becoming more pessimistic.
"Once upon a time I believed that things would get better, but I have abandoned that thought a little bit, I think."
'It is not chaotic in Sweden'
Djokica Lučić, who fled to Sweden from Bosnia in 1992, did not share Per's negative assessment of Swedish politics.
Elections in Sweden were calm and reasonable compared to those back home in the Balkans, he said, and this campaign had been no different.
"It's the duty of all of us who live in Sweden to support democracy," he said. "It's normal here, the way campaigns work, compared to the situation in Bosnia and the former Yugoslavia. It's not chaotic in Sweden."
He said that in his view the Social Democrats were the only party that looked out for the interests of everyone in the country.
"I'm tired of people fighting over the fact that one person is Swedish and another is from Somalia," he said. "People are people."
"It's your duty to Sweden"
Ali, from Tunisia, said it was the second election he had voted in in Sweden, and refused to say which party he would vote for. But he agreed with Lučić about the importance of voting.
"It's our duty as immigrant Swedes to vote," he said. "Everyone who lives in Sweden is Swedish. Sweden is a country for everyone, foreigners and Swedes alike."
'I think both sides are equally ridiculous'
Robin, a man in his 30s, admitted that he had still not decided who he would vote for and would only decide when he has the ballot papers in his hands.
"There has been so much mudslinging back and forth during the campaign that I have not really had the energy to follow it all, just because I think it is at such a ridiculous level," he said. "I think both sides have been equally ridiculous."
'A bit of a shitshow'
Ruben, a few people in front of Robin in the queue, agreed that the campaign had been "a bit of a shitshow".
"I think there has been a very low standard if you compare it to what it was like ten to fifteen years ago," he said.
He said he didn't take opinion polls showing the right-wing parties catching up too seriously.
A woman next to Ruben, who refused to be interviewed or to give her name, merely showed a sign saying "Adjö Tidö", or "Goodbye Tidö".
